There was a point last night, while I was just trying to grind it all out that I wanted to give up. I am not enjoying this season of Ranked Battles -- primarily because I haven't been playing the ships I want to play... nor in the quantities that I'm normally accustomed to playing. And the funny thing is, I haven't been asked to play more games than I'm commonly used to. Let's look at the stats.
I've played around 3000 games of World of Warships in the last year. That's a lot. That's roughly 8 to 9 games a day. If I had played 8 to 9 games a day of Ranked Battles since the season had begun, I would be sitting around 200 matches already which was close to my upper estimates of what I needed to reach Rank 1 anyway with a 65% win rate. So my burnout can't be caused by a high volume of play. By the numbers, Ranked Battles isn't asking me to play more games than I'm normally able to. So what's the big deal?
If you look at the ships I play, I tend to focus on a couple of favourites. I have that wonderful ability of wanting to do the same thing over and over again so long as it's enjoyable (get your minds out of the gutter!). There's a reason I have so many Warspite and Atlanta games, for example. But in Ranked Battles, I haven't been able to pursue the game this way. I've been forcing myself to play ships that I normally prefer in small doses (Destroyers). And it's really wearing thin. I miss my Atago something fierce, which was my go to Ranked Battle ship for two seasons already.
Out of frustration last night, I said screw it and grabbed a Nagato instead for a handful of matches. It went no better or worse than if I had grabbed my usual DDs (Blyskawica or Mahan). That was a much needed break to shake up the monotony of it all.
I can't wait for this season to be over. I think my participation in future seasons will be very much hinging upon which Tiers are included and whether or not I can play some of my favourite ships. If I can't and it looks like it's really going to tax my patience, I'll probably be bowing out. As it is, hitting Rank 6 has been a bit of wind in my sails. I'm going to do what it takes to hit Rank 5 today and be set up for the weekend to try and make a big push towards finishing the season by the end of next week.
Oh, and one last thing. I've been hinting at this for a while, so I'll make a proto-announcement here. I will be asking players to submit their feedback to me regarding this season's Ranked Battles. Details to come next week. Start collecting your thoughts. I will be compiling the messages I receive and handing it over to Wargaming through my direct channel. What will come of it, I don't know, but it's a chance to make your voice be heard.
If you haven't finished the season, don't worry about this too much yet. If you have, start jotting your feelings down. I'll have a template for you all to fill out if that will help. Otherwise, start writing. Make sure you back up your arguments with facts whenever possible. We want to provide data, not just emotional responses.
